07 August 2004 - SEAC has issued a statement following their discussion on the second presumed case of blood transfusion-associated infection with vCJD.

22 July 2004 - SEAC has issued a press release of a second case of possible vCJD prion transmission via blood transfusion.

15 July 2004 - The appointment of Professor Chris Higgins as the new Chair for the Spongiform Encephalopathy Advisory Committee (SEAC) has been announced.

05 July 2004 - SEAC issues a statement (39 KB) on the updated approach to assessing the future number of vCJD cases arising from relaxation of the OTM scheme.

23rd June 2004 - The SEAC open meeting scheduled to take place on 24th June has been cancelled. A number of items scheduled for discussion at this meeting were withdrawn pending additional work. Therefore the committee would only have received an update on the geographical distribution of vCJD cases. As this item will be presented to the Committee for information rather than for discussion, this item will be deferred to the September open meeting. The Committee will now meet to discuss unpublished research data and in accordance with the SEAC Code of Practice*, this will be discussed as "reserved business".

The Committee will consider unpublished data on new modelling work
from the FSA's review of the Over Thirty Month Rule (OTMR), the results from a laboratory study on the effects of tallow separation and solvent
extraction on PrPsc in the rendering process and receive an update containing confidential patient information from the Department of Health.

To ensure that SEAC business is as transparent as possible, SEAC will
place a summary of their discussion on the web-site once this research has been published or placed in the public domain.

14th April 2004 - The 82nd SEAC meeting (11 KB) on 29th April 2004, will be open to the public.

10th March 2004 - The Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) received Royal assent on 30 November 2000. It gives a general right of access to all types of recorded information held by public authorities, sets out exemptions from that right and places a number of obligations on public authorities. As SEAC is a non-departmental public body (NDPB) it is subject to the provisions of the Act.

The following document is a draft publication scheme (25 KB) for SEAC. It is currently awaiting formal approval from the Information Commissioner and as such, may be subject to change. Further details are available from the Information Commission website.

31st October 2003 - The 80th SEAC meeting (10 KB) on 26th November will be open to the public.

18th September 2003 - An Expert Panel group met on 17th September, to consider some unconfirmed ELISA positive samples in the UK national scrapie survey of cull sheep. Background and conclusions of the group are now available (11 KB).

19th August 2003 - The 79th SEAC meeting on 24th September has been cancelled. The next meeting will be SEAC 80 to be held on 26th November at the Conference Centre, Church House, London, and will include a public question and answer session.

If you would like to ask SEAC a question, please submit your query in writing to the Secretariat or via the website. Due to the limited time available for the Q&A session, a selection of pre-submitted questions and questions from the audience will be taken by the Committee on the day of the meeting. In the event that SEAC do not have sufficient time to answer your question on the day, the secretariat will respond to you in writing on behalf of the Committee.

10th July 2003 - SEAC has issued a statement (32 KB) on the BSE risk from bovine tonsil and the consumption of ox tongue.

26th June 2003 - The 78th SEAC meeting took place on the 24th June, a summary of that meeting is available. At this meeting the minutes from the 77th meeting in February were approved and are now available in the previous meetings section of this website. Additionally available is an updated document (PDF) listing the commercial and non-commercial interests (33 KB) of the SEAC members.
